African elephant, photographed and processed in the low-key portrait style.

Aesthetically, this image is all about the contrast of color, texture, and luminosity between the elephant’s tusks and trunk. It highlights the feature that is most emblematic of the species; the tusks, which tragically are also what makes them so highly prized by poachers.

Over time the darkness in my low-key portraits has become increasingly meaningful to me, and this photo certainly embodies that; representing the dark reality of the issues facing Elephants from the continuing ivory trade.
